The Preamble
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Understanding the Preamble
The Preamble sets forth the goals and purposes of the Constitution. It establishes that the government derives its power from the people and outlines six key objectives:
1. Form a More Perfect Union
Create a stronger, more unified nation than the Articles of Confederation.
2. Establish Justice
Create a fair legal system for all citizens.
3. Insure Domestic Tranquility
Maintain peace and order within the country.
4. Provide for Common Defence
Protect the nation from external threats.
5. Promote General Welfare
Support the well-being of all citizens.
6. Secure Liberty
Protect individual freedoms for current and future generations.
